Surface BOP Stacks (Jack-ups / platform drilling facilities)

These systems consist of cantilever mounted equipment designed to move the BOP stack to each of the well locations (well-slots).

Such systems consist of an overhead lifting capability (overhead crane / Chain hoists / Wire Rope hoists) which provide travel in one axis, the cantilever itself normally providing travel in the other axis.

Systems are typically provided with BOP skid(s) in order to assemble/disassemble, maintain and test the BOP Stack – normally in an area with overhead maintenance lifting facilities.

Subsea BOP Stacks (Semi-Submersibles)

Handling systems must address the testing sequences, storage, sea-fastening, guidance and assembly of these constituent components, along with the running and retrieval of the fully assembled stack.

There are several ways in which this can be achieved using combinations of Carriers, Transporters, Overhead Cranes, Spider Beams and Gantry Cranes.

Being on-board floating vessels, it is imperative that suitable guidance systems are employed to safely escort the BOP Stack / its components during horizontal transfers as well as vertical deployment through the moonpool area. Safety of crew, and protection of equipment and structure from damage are critical considerations in designing such a system.

Handling of XMAS Trees and other subsea components

It is normal for Xmas Trees and other subsea components (connectors / wellheads) to be stored close to the opposite end of the moonpool to that of the BOP Stack and its components, and with well-centre occupied between sequences this requires further handling equipment at this end of the moonpool.

Working in conjunction with carriers and/or cranes, skidding systems are often employed to move components from their storage / laydown location(s) on the main deck to the moonpool for deployment and vice versa.

These systems provide cost effective, relieable solutions which are relatively light on maintenance, and do not occupy vital overhead clearance when not in use.
